1st grade, week 31, day 4

Day 154 of 180 · Science: Sink or float · Social studies: Leaders and laws · about 110 minutes

Reading25 min

Read: Henny Penny

  1. Your child reads it aloud to you, then reads one page again with expression, the way a character would say it.
  2. When your child is stuck, say the first sound and let them finish the word, rather than saying the whole word.
  3. Afterward, ask your child to tell it back: what happened first, next and last?
Writing15 min

Should a friend read it?

  1. Write whether a friend should read a book from this week, with two reasons.
  2. Your child writes whether they liked a book, gives two reasons from the story, and ends by saying the opinion again.
Math25 min

Flat faces

  1. Trace around each face of a block on paper. What flat shape does each face make?
  2. A cube's faces are squares; a can's flat faces are circles.
Science20 min

Heavy isn't everything

  1. An apple floats and a small coin sinks. Test a big piece of wood and a tiny pebble.
  2. Talk about why size alone doesn't tell you what will float.
Social studies10 min

How a law is made

  1. Talk about how a town decides on a new law: people share ideas, leaders talk it over, and they vote.
  2. Your child tells someone at home about today, then writes one word for it on the family calendar.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Why Is the Ocean Salty?

  1. Read “Why Is the Ocean Salty?” aloud, and let your child turn the pages.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
