1st grade homeschool plan, week 24
Two sounds of oo · Telling time to the hour · School, then and now
Week 24 of 36 in 1st grade, in quarter 3. Five days, about 110 minutes each.
Reading: oo, oo says /oo/ in moon and a shorter sound in book. Words to read and spell: moon, food, zoo, soon, book, look, foot and wood. Sight words: “best” and “both”. The new story is “Dot and the Log”, and the reread is “A Bath for the Birds”.
Writing: Responding to a book. Your child writes the title, what the book was about in one sentence, and what they thought of it and why.
Math: Telling time to the hour. Reading the hour on a clock with hands and on a digital clock.
Social studies: School, then and now. One-room schoolhouses, slates and chalk, and how learning has changed and stayed the same.
Science, a shorter piece each day: Worms and soil. Soil is made of tiny bits of rock and old leaves, and worms mix it and make it good for plants.
Read-alouds: “Newt Is Nervous”, “The Magic Paintbrush”, “Vikings Did Not Wear Horns”, “The Elephant's Child” and “Muskrat Is Grumpy”.
For the whole family: Play school the old way for an hour: one room, everyone together, slates or small chalkboards.
