Day 120 of 180 · Social studies: School, then and now · Science: Worms and soil · about 110 minutes

Reading25 min

Reread: A Bath for the Birds

  1. Reread “A Bath for the Birds” from last week. The second time is smoother and quicker: that is fluency growing.
  2. Find this week's sight words, “best” and “both”, in the book or on their cards.
  3. Let your child pick one page to read to someone else in the family.
Writing15 min

Would I read it again?

  1. Write whether you would read a book from this week again, and give a reason.
  2. Your child writes the title, what the book was about in one sentence, and what they thought of it and why.
Math25 min

How long is an hour?

  1. Set a timer for one hour and notice what gets done before it rings.
  2. Check the clock at the start and the end: the short hand moved one number.
Science10 min

Worms help plants

  1. Worms make tunnels for air and water and leave behind rich soil. Draw a worm's tunnels under a plant.
  2. Your child writes one question today's science made them wonder about.
Social studies20 min

What stays the same

  1. What is the same about school then and now? Reading, writing, numbers, friends and a teacher.
  2. Your child fills in a same-and-different diagram: school then, school now, and both.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Muskrat Is Grumpy

  1. Read “Muskrat Is Grumpy” aloud. If your child asks to hear it again, say yes: hearing a story twice is how it sticks.
  2. Afterward, ask: has anything like this happened to you? How was it the same, or different?
