Reading25 min

New: ou and ow

  1. This week: ou and ow. Ou and ow can both say /ow/, the sound you make when you are hurt: out, cow.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: out, cloud, house and mouth.
  3. Your child finds a ou and ow word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

My question

  1. Write a question about bones or muscles that you want to answer.
  2. Start with a question about the topic. Your child finds three facts that answer it and writes them as a paragraph.
Math25 min

Half past

  1. When the long hand points to 6, it has gone halfway around: half past the hour.
  2. Show half past 2 on the clock face. Where is the short hand? Halfway between 2 and 3.
Science20 min

Your skeleton

  1. Bones hold you up, give you your shape and keep soft parts safe. A grown-up has 206 bones.
  2. Feel your skull, your ribs and the bumps of your backbone.
Social studies10 min

Photo detective

  1. Look at an old family photo and list three clues about when it was taken.
  2. Afterward, your child draws today's activity and writes one sentence about it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Tavi and the Bones Under Her Skin

  1. Read “Tavi and the Bones Under Her Skin” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
