Day 116 of 180 · Social studies: School, then and now · Science: Worms and soil · about 110 minutes

Reading25 min

New: oo

  1. This week: oo. Oo says /oo/ in moon and a shorter sound in book.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: moon, food, zoo and soon.
  3. Your child finds a oo word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

Title and topic

  1. Write the title of a read-aloud from this week and what it was about in one sentence.
  2. Your child writes the title, what the book was about in one sentence, and what they thought of it and why.
Math25 min

The hands on a clock

  1. The short hand points to the hour and the long hand points to the minutes. Find both on the clock face.
  2. When the long hand points straight up at 12, it is something o'clock.
Science10 min

What is in soil

  1. Spread a cup of soil on white paper and sort what you find: tiny rocks, bits of leaves, roots, maybe a bug.
  2. Your child draws what they saw in a science notebook and writes one sentence about it.
Social studies20 min

One-room schools

  1. Long ago, many children of all ages learned in one room with one teacher, the older ones helping the younger.
  2. How is that like learning at home? How is it different?
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Newt Is Nervous

  1. Read “Newt Is Nervous” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
