1st grade homeschool plan, week 23

Bossy r: er, ir and ur · Measuring with units · Homes, then and now

Week 23 of 36 in 1st grade, in quarter 3. Five days, about 110 minutes each.

Reading: er, ir and ur, er, ir and ur all say the same sound, /er/, as in her, bird and fur. Words to read and spell: her, fern, bird, girl, first, fur, turn and hurt. Sight words: “been” and “before”. The new story is “A Bath for the Birds”, and the reread is “The Little Red Hen”.

Writing: A friendly letter. A friendly letter has a date, a greeting, a body, a closing and a name. Your child writes to someone they know.

Math: Measuring with units. Measuring length with same-size units laid end to end, with no gaps or overlaps.

Social studies: Homes, then and now. How homes were lit, heated and kept long ago, and what has changed.

Science, a shorter piece each day: Trees. Trees have roots, a trunk, branches and leaves; they give shade, homes for animals and the wood and fruit people use.

Read-alouds: “The Thread That Glowed”, “The Boxcar Children”, “The Princess and the Pea”, “The Cat That Walked by Himself” and “Rumpelstiltskin”.

For the whole family: Spend one evening hour with the lights off and talk about how families managed before electric lights.
