1st grade, week 23, day 1

Day 111 of 180 · Social studies: Homes, then and now · Science: Trees · about 110 minutes

Reading25 min

New: er, ir and ur

  1. This week: er, ir and ur. Er, ir and ur all say the same sound, /er/, as in her, bird and fur.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: her, fern, bird and girl.
  3. Your child finds a er, ir and ur word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

Parts of a letter

  1. Write the date, a greeting and a closing for a letter to a grandparent or an older friend.
  2. A friendly letter has a date, a greeting, a body, a closing and a name. Your child writes to someone they know.
Math25 min

Paper clips end to end

  1. Lay paper clips end to end along a book, with no gaps and no overlaps. How many paper clips long is it?
  2. Measure a crayon and a spoon the same way, and write each length.
Science10 min

Tree parts

  1. Draw a tree and label its roots, trunk, branches and leaves.
  2. Your child draws what they saw in a science notebook and writes one sentence about it.
Social studies20 min

Light then and now

  1. Before electric lights, homes were lit by candles, oil lamps and the fire.
  2. Turn off the lights at dusk for ten minutes. What is hard to do in the dark?
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Thread That Glowed

  1. Read “The Thread That Glowed” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
