Day 19 of 180 · Social studies: Rules and getting along · Science: Sorting and comparing · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Read: Duck Says Sorry

  1. Your child reads it aloud to you, then reads one page again with expression, the way a character would say it.
  2. When your child is stuck, say the first sound and let them finish the word, rather than saying the whole word.
  3. Afterward, ask: what was your favorite page, and why?
Writing20 min

Is it fair

  1. Answer in full: what makes a rule fair? Give an example.
  2. A full answer turns the question into the start of the sentence: "Why do we have laws? We have laws because..." Then it gives a reason and an example.
Math30 min

Number names

  1. Write 365 in words: three hundred sixty-five. Then read and write two more.
  2. Say a number; your child writes it with digits.
Science15 min

A sorting chart

  1. Make a chart of objects with columns for what each is made of and whether it floats or sinks.
  2. Your child writes two facts they found out and one question still left.
Social studies20 min

A fair rule

  1. Test a rule with three questions: is it fair, is it clear, does it keep people safe?
  2. Try the questions on a family rule and on a made-up silly rule.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Dog in the Manger

  1. Read “The Dog in the Manger” aloud, and let your child turn the pages.
  2. This is an old tale, told for a long time. Afterward, ask: what did someone in the story learn?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
