Reading30 min

Review: read the words

  1. Read these words from the last few weeks: phone, happier, near, photo, happiest, clear, graph, funnier and year.
  2. Sort them by their spelling pattern, then read each group again.
  3. Any word that is slow goes on a card to read every day this week.
Writing20 min

What I learned this year

  1. Write five things you learned in 2nd grade, one from each subject.
  2. Your child writes about their year: what they learned, what was hard, and what they want to learn next.
Math30 min

Facts and place value

  1. Do two minutes of mixed facts, then write 735 in expanded form and in words.
  2. Compare 735 and 753 with a sign.
Science15 min

A question to test

  1. Write three questions and pick one you can test with things at home, like which paper towel soaks up the most.
  2. Your child writes what they did, what they saw, and what they think it means, in a science notebook.
Social studies20 min

A timeline of my year

  1. Make a timeline of the school year with two events from each quarter.
  2. Write a caption for each event.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Priya Moves Away

  1. Read “Priya Moves Away” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
