2nd grade homeschool plan, week 28
Open and closed syllables · Shapes and their sides · Seeds and growing
Week 28 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 4. Five days, about 130 minutes each.
Reading: open and closed syllables, a syllable ending in a vowel says the long sound (ro-bot); one shut by a consonant says the short sound (rab-bit). Words to read and spell: robot, music, tiger, paper, rabbit, basket, napkin and pilot. Sight words: “light” and “long”. The new story is “Jack and the Beanstalk”, and the reread is “The Tooth on the Beach”.
Writing: A made-up story: characters and setting. Your child plans a story on a story map: who, where and when, before writing the beginning.
Math: Shapes and their sides. Triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons and hexagons, named by their sides and corners.
Science: Seeds and growing. A seed holds a baby plant and its food, and with water, warmth and light it sprouts and grows.
Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Places in a community. The library, post office, fire station, school, stores and parks, and what each one does for the people around it.
Read-alouds: “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “The Magic Paintbrush”, “Water Uphill”, “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” and “Why Do Leaves Change Color?”.
For the whole family: Open a soaked bean to find the baby plant, then plant a few and measure them each week.
