Day 134 of 180 · Science: Healthy habits · Social studies: What is a community? · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Read: The Tooth on the Beach

  1. Your child reads it aloud to you, then reads one page again with expression, the way a character would say it.
  2. When your child is stuck, say the first sound and let them finish the word, rather than saying the whole word.
  3. Afterward, ask your child to tell it back: what happened first, next and last?
Writing20 min

Better words

  1. Swap three plain words in your report for exact ones.
  2. To revise, your child adds one fact, takes out one sentence that doesn't belong, and makes the ending stronger.
Math30 min

Arrays and groups check

  1. Build three arrays and three sets of equal groups, and write the adding sentence for each.
  2. Explain one of them to a grown-up.
Science20 min

The trip food takes

  1. Food travels from the mouth down a tube to the stomach, then through the intestines, where the body takes what it needs.
  2. Measure out a string about 22 feet long: that is about how long a grown-up's small intestine is.
Social studies15 min

A community problem

  1. Pick a problem in your community, like litter, and write two ways people could solve it together.
  2. Your child draws a labeled picture of today's activity and writes a caption.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Stone Soup

  1. Read “Stone Soup” aloud, and let your child turn the pages.
  2. This is an old tale, told for a long time. Afterward, ask: what did someone in the story learn?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
