2nd grade, week 26, day 1

Day 126 of 180 · Science: Heart and lungs · Social studies: Timelines · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: -er and -or

  1. This week: -er and -or. -er and -or can mean a person who does something: teach, teacher; act, actor.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: teacher, farmer, baker and singer.
  3. Your child finds a -er and -or word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

Taking notes

  1. While reading about the heart, write five notes of one to three words each.
  2. Your child turns short notes (single words and phrases) into full sentences for a report.
Math30 min

Groups the same size

  1. Put 15 beans into 5 cups, the same number in each. How many in each cup?
  2. Then put 15 beans into groups of 3. How many groups are there?
Science20 min

The heart's four rooms

  1. The heart has four rooms called chambers: two take blood in and two push it out.
  2. Draw a heart as a square cut into four, with arrows for blood coming in and going out.
Social studies15 min

Years and decades

  1. A decade is ten years. Count the decades from the year a grandparent was born until now.
  2. Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Hum Under My Hand

  1. Read “Hum Under My Hand” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
