Day 99 of 180 · Science: Water on Earth · Social studies: Yesterday, today and tomorrow · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Read: Rain's Long Trip

  1. Your child reads it aloud to you, then reads one page again with expression, the way a character would say it.
  2. When your child is stuck, say the first sound and let them finish the word, rather than saying the whole word.
  3. Afterward, ask: what was your favorite page, and why?
Writing20 min

A word map

  1. Make a word map for the water cycle: what it means, an example, and a picture.
  2. Informative writing explains new words. Your child writes a word, what it means, and an example of it.
Math30 min

Zeros in the middle

  1. For 403 − 158, break a hundred into tens, then a ten into ones. Go slowly with the blocks.
  2. Do 600 − 245 together the same way.
Science20 min

An evaporation race

  1. Put the same amount of water in a wide dish and a narrow glass, and mark both levels.
  2. Check every day this week. Which loses water faster, and why?
Social studies15 min

Then, now and later

  1. Find an old toy, one you play with now, and one you hope to have, and say what each tells about time passing.
  2. Your child draws a labeled picture of today's activity and writes a caption.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Ben and the Puddle Boat

  1. Read “Ben and the Puddle Boat” aloud, and let your child turn the pages.
  2. Afterward, ask: who was your favorite in the story, and why?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
