1st grade homeschool plan, week 21
Bossy r: ar · Subtracting tens · Land on Earth
Week 21 of 36 in 1st grade, in quarter 3. Five days, about 110 minutes each.
Reading: ar, an r after a vowel changes its sound: ar says /ar/ as in car. Words to read and spell: car, star, park, farm, jar, hard, yard and shark. Sight words: “when” and “always”. The new story is “Liv and the Ants”, and the reread is “Gus and the Big Rock”.
Writing: A report with a labeled picture. A labeled diagram shows the parts of something. Your child draws it, labels three parts, and writes a sentence about each.
Math: Subtracting tens. Taking tens away from tens: 80 − 30, and seeing it as 8 tens take away 3 tens.
Science: Land on Earth. Mountains, hills, valleys and plains, and how wind and water slowly change the shape of the land.
Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Days, weeks and months. A calendar shows the seven days of the week and the twelve months of the year, and helps people plan.
Read-alouds: “Pecos Bill”, “Three Rocks in a Shoebox”, “How the Camel Got His Hump”, “Dinosaurs Are Still Here” and “Bracken Keeps the Hill”.
For the whole family: Build mountains and valleys in a sandbox or a tray of soil, then pour water and watch what happens.
