Day 101 of 180 · Science: Land on Earth · Social studies: Days, weeks and months · about 110 minutes

Reading25 min

New: ar

  1. This week: ar. An r after a vowel changes its sound: ar says /ar/ as in car.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: car, star, park and farm.
  3. Your child finds a ar word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

Draw the land

  1. Draw a mountain, a valley and a plain, and label each one.
  2. A labeled diagram shows the parts of something. Your child draws it, labels three parts, and writes a sentence about each.
Math25 min

Tens take away tens again

  1. 80 − 30: 8 tens take away 3 tens leaves 5 tens, which is 50.
  2. Show it with ten rods, then do 60 − 40 and 90 − 70.
Science20 min

Mountains, valleys and plains

  1. Find mountains, valleys and flat plains on Planet Earth.
  2. Your child draws each one and labels it.
Social studies10 min

The days of the week

  1. Say the seven days in order and find today on a calendar.
  2. Afterward, your child draws today's activity and writes one sentence about it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Pecos Bill

  1. Read “Pecos Bill” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
