Reread: Kate and the Puddle

  1. Reread “Kate and the Puddle” from last week. The second time is smoother and quicker: that is fluency growing.
  2. Find this week's sight words, “walk” and “were”, in the book or on their cards.
  3. Let your child pick one page to read to someone else in the family.

My water report

  1. Put your facts together: a topic sentence, three facts and an ending sentence.
  2. A report teaches facts. Your child writes a topic sentence, three facts in their own words, and an ending sentence.

Adding tens on paper

  1. Write ten sums like 43 + 20 and 16 + 70, and solve them.
  2. Your child says which digit changed each time, and why the other one stayed the same.
Science20 min

Water climbs

  1. Set up walking water with cups, paper towels and colored water.
  2. Check it every hour and write down how far the water has climbed.
Social studies10 min

Long ago and soon

  1. Talk about something that happened long ago, something from last week, and something coming soon.
  2. Afterward, your child draws a picture and writes a caption under it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Monkey and the Crocodile

  1. Read “The Monkey and the Crocodile” aloud. If your child asks to hear it again, say yes: hearing a story twice is how it sticks.
  2. This is an old tale, told for a long time. Afterward, ask: what did someone in the story learn?
