1st grade homeschool plan, week 20

Long e: y at the end · Adding tens to a two-digit number · Water on Earth

Week 20 of 36 in 1st grade, in quarter 3. Five days, about 110 minutes each.

Reading: y as long e, y at the end of a longer word often says long e: happy, puppy. Words to read and spell: happy, puppy, funny, sunny, baby, candy, lady and bunny. Sight words: “walk” and “were”. The new story is “Gus and the Big Rock”, and the reread is “Kate and the Puddle”.

Writing: A small report: facts about water. A report teaches facts. Your child writes a topic sentence, three facts in their own words, and an ending sentence.

Math: Adding tens to a two-digit number. Adding tens to any number: 25 + 30 is 55, by counting on by tens.

Science: Water on Earth. Oceans, lakes, rivers and rain: most of Earth is covered by water, and the same water moves around and around.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Yesterday, today and tomorrow. Time words like yesterday, today, tomorrow, morning, afternoon and night put the events of a day in order.

Read-alouds: “Why Is the Ocean Salty?”, “Rain's Long Trip”, “The Otter's Rock”, “Lulu the Lanternfish Lights Up” and “The Monkey and the Crocodile”.

For the whole family: Fill a bowl with water and talk about everywhere water goes in a day at your home.
