1st grade homeschool plan, week 19

Long i: igh and y · Adding a two-digit and a one-digit number · Needs and wants

Week 19 of 36 in 1st grade, in quarter 3. Five days, about 110 minutes each.

Reading: igh and y, igh says long i (light), and so does y at the end of a short word (fly). Words to read and spell: light, night, high, right, fly, my, cry and sky. Sight words: “then” and “think”. The new story is “Kate and the Puddle”, and the reread is “Fay and the Kite”.

Writing: Opinion: need or want. Your child writes an opinion with a reason about spending and saving, and ends by saying the opinion again.

Math: Adding a two-digit and a one-digit number. Adding numbers like 34 + 5 and 47 + 6, making a new ten when the ones add up to 10 or more.

Social studies: Needs and wants. Needs are things we must have to live, wants are things we would like, and people work to pay for both.

Science, a shorter piece each day: Mixing and dissolving. Some things disappear into water, like sugar and salt, and some do not, like sand; mixing colors makes new ones.

Read-alouds: “The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs”, “The Fisherman and His Wife”, “The Emperor's New Clothes”, “The Dog in the Manger” and “Puss in Boots”.

For the whole family: Cut pictures from an old catalog and sort them into needs and wants on two sheets.
