Day 91 of 180 · Social studies: Needs and wants · Science: Mixing and dissolving · about 110 minutes

Reading25 min

New: igh and y

  1. This week: igh and y. Igh says long i (light), and so does y at the end of a short word (fly).
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: light, night, high and right.
  3. Your child finds a igh and y word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

Need or want?

  1. Write whether a bike is a need or a want, and give a reason.
  2. Your child writes an opinion with a reason about spending and saving, and ends by saying the opinion again.
Math25 min

Adding ones to a two-digit number

  1. 34 + 5: the tens stay at 3 tens, and 4 ones and 5 ones make 9 ones: 39.
  2. Build it with base-ten blocks, then do 52 + 6 and 71 + 7.
Science10 min

Warm and cold water

  1. Stir a spoon of sugar into warm water and a spoon into cold water. Which disappears faster?
  2. Your child draws what they saw in a science notebook and writes one sentence about it.
Social studies20 min

Needs and wants

  1. A need is something we must have to live, like food, water, clothes and a home; a want is nice to have but not needed.
  2. Your child makes two lists, needs and wants, with five things in each.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs

  1. Read “The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
