History Unboxed sends hands-on history boxes, one place or period at a time, filled with stories, crafts, activities, recipes and historical materials, and no screen needed. Families choose Ancient History, the Middle Ages, American History or Modern World History, as single boxes, a monthly subscription or a full curriculum path. Each box comes in a Youth version for elementary to early high school and a Young Adult version for older teens and adults.

What it does well

  • Every box is hands-on: a child makes, cooks and plays something from the period, which suits children who learn by doing.
  • The Ancient History subscription runs in order through 18 places, so a year has a clear path.
  • Siblings of different ages can share a topic, with a Youth or Young Adult version for each box.
  • It is screen-free, with stories and a magazine in each box.

Watch for

  • At $671.40 a year, a subscription costs far more than a set of history books.
  • Boxes can take about three weeks to ship and may arrive out of order.
  • Younger children need a grown-up's help, and the Young Adult box may cover mature topics.
  • Subscriptions renew on their own until cancelled.

It fits

A family that wants history to be something children make and taste, one place at a time, beside reading.

It doesn’t fit

A family that wants a full textbook course with a daily schedule, or a low-cost history plan.

What we read, and how we label

Every fact on a card was read on the publisher's own website on the date shown, and the page it came from is linked. A fact we could not confirm there is left out. Costs are for one child and one year of the main package, as the publisher's page showed them that day; prices and sales change. Method and format are the publisher's own description where it gives one. The only thing we say about religion is one label, secular or faith-based, given by the rule above; where the publisher's pages don't settle it, the card has no label.
