Notgrass History
Notgrass History sells history, geography, government and economics courses for 1st to 12th grade: three elementary, three middle school and five high school courses, each complete on its own. A middle school course such as America the Beautiful has 30 units of five daily lessons that a child reads alone or hears aloud, with primary sources, map work, a timeline, workbook or review questions and assigned novels; most lessons take 45 to 90 minutes. You buy a bundle of printed books for each course.

What it does well
- Each course stands alone, and courses at a level can be used in any order, so you can start in any grade.
- The middle school bundle holds the lessons, primary source readings, maps, timeline, answer key and the novels, so there is little else to buy.
- Lessons are open-and-go, and each comes with a list of activities so you can assign more to an older child and fewer to a younger one.
- The high school courses include government and economics as well as history and geography.
Watch for
- A lesson with all its activities takes 45 to 90 minutes, which is a long history day for a younger child.
- Students write in the maps, timeline, workbook and lesson review, so each extra child needs another set of those books.
- Elementary courses cover geography and an introduction to US history; world history starts in middle school.
- A middle school bundle costs $221 for one subject, though every book is also sold on its own if you already own some of the novels.
It fits
A family that wants an open-and-go history course with real novels and primary sources, used with one child or several together.
It doesn’t fit
A family that wants short daily lessons, or a history course that is one inexpensive book.

What we read, and how we label
Every fact on a card was read on the publisher's own website on the date shown, and the page it came from is linked. A fact we could not confirm there is left out. Costs are for one child and one year of the main package, as the publisher's page showed them that day; prices and sales change. Method and format are the publisher's own description where it gives one. The only thing we say about religion is one label, secular or faith-based, given by the rule above; where the publisher's pages don't settle it, the card has no label.
