Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding is a K to 8 science program in three books of lesson plans for the parent or teacher: Volume I for K to 2nd grade, Volume II for 3rd to 5th and Volume III for 6th to 8th. Lessons are hands-on and minds-on, building in sequence and teaching matter, life, physical and earth science side by side, each with review questions, writing tasks and a list of books to read.

What it does well

  • Each lesson builds on the ones before it, so children see how ideas in different fields of science connect.
  • Lessons lead children to reach conclusions themselves through observation and reasoning, with practical activities for each one.
  • Every lesson has review and assessment questions, writing assignments and a list of books for the age.
  • The author answers questions on the program's own forum, and appendices map the lessons to NGSS standards.

Watch for

  • The books are teacher guides, not student books, so the parent reads ahead and leads every lesson.
  • There are no pictures or graphs in the books; the texts send you to online image searches instead.
  • The volumes must be done in order: older children new to science are told to start with Volume I.
  • The program's site lists no prices and sends buyers to an online bookseller.

It fits

A parent who enjoys science and wants to lead discussions and simple experiments, building a real sequence of ideas from kindergarten up.

It doesn’t fit

A parent who wants an open-and-go box with student pages and supplies, or a child who will work through science alone.

What we read, and how we label

Every fact on a card was read on the publisher's own website on the date shown, and the page it came from is linked. A fact we could not confirm there is left out. Costs are for one child and one year of the main package, as the publisher's page showed them that day; prices and sales change. Method and format are the publisher's own description where it gives one. The only thing we say about religion is one label, secular or faith-based, given by the rule above; where the publisher's pages don't settle it, the card has no label.
