2nd grade, week 32, day 1

Day 156 of 180 · Science: Build it strong · Social studies: The American flag · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: three syllables

  1. This week: three syllables. Clap the beats, then read one part at a time: ba-na-na, el-e-phant.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: banana, dinosaur, elephant and tomato.
  3. Your child finds a three syllables word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

Sense words

  1. List sense words for building a tower: what you see, hear, smell and touch.
  2. A sense poem has a line for each sense about one topic. Your child reads it aloud to hear how it sounds.
Math30 min

Look for tens first

  1. Add 14 + 6 + 23 + 7 by finding pairs that make tens: 14 + 6 = 20 and 23 + 7 = 30.
  2. Then add 20 + 30 = 50.
Science20 min

The design steps

  1. Engineers ask, imagine, plan, create and improve. Write the five steps on a card.
  2. Use the card for every build this week.
Social studies15 min

Flag facts

  1. The American flag has 13 stripes for the first 13 states and 50 stars for the 50 states today. Count both.
  2. Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Squeaky Gate

  1. Read “The Squeaky Gate” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
