Reading30 min

Reread: Tadpoles in a Jar

  1. Reread “Tadpoles in a Jar” from last week. The second time is smoother and quicker: that is fluency growing.
  2. Find this week's sight words, “own” and “pick”, in the book or on their cards.
  3. Let your child pick one page to read to someone else in the family.
Writing20 min

The whole story

  1. Copy your whole story, beginning, middle and end, and read it to someone.
  2. A good ending solves the problem and shows how the character feels, or what they learned.
Math30 min

Design a garden

  1. Design a garden bed on grid paper with rows and columns of square plots.
  2. Count the plots, and write how many rows and how many columns.
Science20 min

Floating on air

  1. Build a balloon hovercraft and watch it float on a cushion of air.
  2. Test it on a smooth table and on carpet, and write which worked better.
Social studies15 min

Write a law

  1. Write a new law for your town with the reason for it, and present it to the family.
  2. Afterward, your child writes how today's topic shows up in their own town or home.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Lulu the Lanternfish Lights Up

  1. Read “Lulu the Lanternfish Lights Up” aloud. If your child asks to hear it again, say yes: hearing a story twice is how it sticks.
  2. Afterward, ask: has anything like this happened to you? How was it the same, or different?
