Day 71 of 180 · Science: Ramps and rolling · Social studies: Choosing what to buy · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: ou and ow

  1. This week: ou and ow. Ou (cloud) and ow (crown) both say /ow/, in short words and longer ones.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: cloud, sound, mouth and found.
  3. Your child finds a ou and ow word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

Why I am writing

  1. Write the first sentence of a letter that says why you are writing: to invite a friend to a ramp race.
  2. A letter has a date, a greeting, a body that says why you are writing, a closing and a name.
Math30 min

Count by 5s around the clock

  1. Point to each number on the clock face and count by 5s: 5, 10, 15, all the way to 60.
  2. Each number the long hand passes is five more minutes.
Science20 min

Ramp height and distance

  1. Roll a car down a ramp at three heights and measure in inches how far it goes past the end.
  2. Make a table and a bar graph of the results.
Social studies15 min

Scarcity

  1. Nobody has enough money for everything. Pick three wants from a catalog, then choose just one.
  2. Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Elevator Plan

  1. Read “The Elevator Plan” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
