1st grade homeschool plan, week 28

Compound words · Flat shapes and their sides · Seeds and growing

Week 28 of 36 in 1st grade, in quarter 4. Five days, about 110 minutes each.

Reading: compound words, two whole words joined into one: sun + set makes sunset. Words to read and spell: sunset, rainbow, cupcake, football, bedtime, playground, snowman and backpack. Sight words: “first” and “five”. The new story is “Pim and the Mitten”, and the reread is “The Bean in the Cup”.

Writing: A story with a problem and a fix. A made-up story has characters, a setting, a problem, and a way the problem gets fixed. Your child plans it on a story map first.

Math: Flat shapes and their sides. Telling shapes apart by their sides and corners, not their color or size, and drawing them.

Science: Seeds and growing. A seed holds a baby plant and its food, and with water, warmth and light it sprouts and grows.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Places in a community. The library, post office, fire station, school, stores and parks, and what each one does for the people around it.

Read-alouds: “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Momotaro, the Peach Boy”, “Water Uphill”, “Johnny Appleseed” and “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”.

For the whole family: Open a soaked bean to find the baby plant, then plant a few and measure them each week.
