Reading25 min

Reread: The Bean in the Cup

  1. Reread “The Bean in the Cup” from last week. The second time is smoother and quicker: that is fluency growing.
  2. Find this week's sight words, “first” and “five”, in the book or on their cards.
  3. Let your child pick one page to read to someone else in the family.
Writing15 min

Make it better

  1. Read your whole story aloud and add one sentence that makes it better.
  2. A made-up story has characters, a setting, a problem, and a way the problem gets fixed. Your child plans it on a story map first.
Math25 min

Shape hunt

  1. Hunt for flat shapes at home: a window, a plate, a sign, a book cover.
  2. Spin the shapes wheel and find one of whatever it lands on.
Science20 min

Measure the sprouts

  1. Measure your sprouts with paper clips or a ruler and write each length.
  2. Make a chart, and measure again each week.
Social studies10 min

A map of my town

  1. Draw a town map with a library, a school, a park, a store and a fire station, and a key.
  2. Afterward, your child draws a picture and writes a caption under it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Tale of Peter Rabbit

  1. Read “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” aloud. If your child asks to hear it again, say yes: hearing a story twice is how it sticks.
  2. This is an old tale, told for a long time. Afterward, ask: what did someone in the story learn?
