Day 141 of 180 · Science: Bugs and small creatures · Social studies: City, town and country · about 110 minutes

Reading25 min

New: two syllables

  1. This week: two syllables. Split between the two middle consonants and read each part: rab-bit, nap-kin.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: rabbit, napkin, picnic and kitten.
  3. Your child finds a two syllables word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

Quotation marks

  1. Write a sentence where an ant says hello, with quotation marks around its words.
  2. When characters talk, their words go inside quotation marks. Your child adds one or two lines of talking to a story.
Math25 min

Two triangles make a square

  1. Cut a paper square from corner to corner. What two shapes do you get?
  2. Put them back together a new way: what shape is it now?
Science20 min

What makes an insect

  1. Insects have six legs, three body parts (head, thorax and abdomen) and often wings.
  2. Look at an ant, a beetle or a picture of one and point to each part.
Social studies10 min

City life

  1. Look at pictures of a city and list what you see: tall buildings, buses, crowds and apartments.
  2. Afterward, your child draws today's activity and writes one sentence about it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Look at Ants

  1. Read “Look at Ants” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
