Spelling Power
Spelling Power is one manual, now in its 5th edition, that teaches the 5,000 most used English words from 3rd grade to adult in about 15 minutes a day. Placement tests put each child on one of 11 levels of word lists; each word is studied until it is spelled right and then checked again later, and words misspelled in daily work join the tests. One manual serves the whole family, with a record book for each child.

- Placement
- No placement test on the publisher’s site when we checked.
What it does well
- One manual covers every level and every child, so there is no new book to buy each year.
- Placement tests start each child where their spelling is, and the lists move at each child's own pace.
- Words a child misspells in everyday writing join that child's tests until they are learned.
- About 15 minutes a day fits beside a full language arts plan.
Watch for
- The manual gives step-by-step directions rather than a script, so the parent has to read up and plan the tests.
- It is not for beginning readers: a child should be about 8 and reading at a 2nd grade level.
- The Basic Pack price is shown two different ways on the site, so check the total in the cart.
It fits
A family with several children who wants one spelling book that adjusts to each child for years.
It doesn’t fit
A family with a beginning reader, or a parent who wants every spelling lesson scripted.

What we read, and how we label
Every fact on a card was read on the publisher's own website on the date shown, and the page it came from is linked. A fact we could not confirm there is left out. Costs are for one child and one year of the main package, as the publisher's page showed them that day; prices and sales change. Method and format are the publisher's own description where it gives one. The only thing we say about religion is one label, secular or faith-based, given by the rule above; where the publisher's pages don't settle it, the card has no label.
