Analytical Grammar
Analytical Grammar teaches grammar, mechanics and usage in five levels, from Grammar Basics with classic sentence diagramming to Punctuation and Usage. Each lesson has Lesson Notes for the instructor and student, practice exercises, and an open-book assessment, and a lesson usually runs over a week rather than a day. It was written in the 1980s by a public school English teacher and is now published by Demme Learning.

What it does well
- Levels build in a clear order, from parts of speech and diagramming to clauses, phrases and comma rules.
- Assessments are open book, which keeps the focus on applying the rules rather than memorising them.
- Pacing is flexible: a lesson can be split for a child who needs longer or shortened for a confident one.
- Three free placement activities, with answer keys, show where to start.
Watch for
- It is not for young children: the publisher suggests waiting until at least age 9.
- The publisher's pages give no prices or lesson counts; those are on the Demme Learning store.
- It is grammar only, so writing needs another program alongside.
It fits
An older child, or a parent who wants to fill gaps, working through grammar in order a little each day over a week.
It doesn’t fit
A young child, or a family that wants grammar folded into a full language arts course with writing.

What we read, and how we label
Every fact on a card was read on the publisher's own website on the date shown, and the page it came from is linked. A fact we could not confirm there is left out. Costs are for one child and one year of the main package, as the publisher's page showed them that day; prices and sales change. Method and format are the publisher's own description where it gives one. The only thing we say about religion is one label, secular or faith-based, given by the rule above; where the publisher's pages don't settle it, the card has no label.
