Print homeschool language arts programs, compared

10 programs, listed alphabetically, each with its grades, method, format and cost a year as the publisher’s own site showed them on October 29, 2026. Open a card for the strengths, the watch-outs and who it fits.

What this list holds

Print programs are books, workbooks or printable PDFs. The lessons need no screen, though some have optional videos.

Language arts covers writing, grammar, spelling, handwriting and literature. Few programs do all of it, so families often combine two or three: one for writing, one for spelling, and a handwriting book.

This list holds programs sold for language arts on their own. Full curricula that teach it along with every other subject are on homeschool all-in-one curricula.

At a glance

Each program in a line

  • All About Spelling: A parent who wants a scripted, step-by-step spelling program that explains the rules, for a child who already reads.
  • Blossom and Root: A family that wants a gentle, hands-on year built around nature, books and art, and is happy to choose its own math.
  • Brave Writer: A parent who wants to coach writing through good books and conversation, with one relaxed program for one or several children.
  • The Good and the Beautiful: A family that wants low-cost, open-and-go printed lessons and likes teaching science and history to several children at once.
  • Learning Without Tears: A family that wants a low-cost, grade-by-grade handwriting workbook, including for a young child who needs help with letter formation and fine motor skills.
  • Lightning Literature: A family that wants language arts built around real children's novels, with a parent who reads along and teaches from a guide.
  • Logic of English: A parent who wants to teach phonics, spelling and grammar together from scripted lessons with plenty of games, whether with a 4-year-old or an older child who struggles with spelling.
  • Spelling You See: A family that wants short daily spelling lessons built on copywork and dictation instead of word lists and tests.
  • Tapestry of Grace: A family with children of several ages who wants one shared history and literature plan built on living books and discussion, and is willing to plan each week.
  • Writing With Ease: A parent of a young writer who wants short, scripted daily lessons in narration, copywork and dictation from good books.

Before you buy

Check what you print yourself and what is shipped, and whether a younger sibling can reuse the books or needs a new workbook.

Check what each level teaches and whether the parent needs to grade the writing. Writing programs differ most in how much the parent coaches; spelling programs differ in whether they teach rules or patterns.

Most publishers post samples and a placement test; each card links the placement test where the publisher has one.

How we label

Every fact on a card was read on the publisher's own website on the date shown, and the page it came from is linked. A fact we could not confirm there is left out. Costs are for one child and one year of the main package, as the publisher's page showed them that day; prices and sales change. Method and format are the publisher's own description where it gives one. The only thing we say about religion is one label, secular or faith-based, given by the rule above; where the publisher's pages don't settle it, the card has no label.
