Shurley English

By Shurley Instructional MaterialsChecked October 31, 2026No affiliate links. Programs never pay to appear. How we label

Shurley English is a grammar and writing program that ties the two together: children learn the parts of speech through chanted jingles and a question-and-answer flow for each sentence, then follow step-by-step writing processes. The homeschool print edition is a kit per level, with a scripted Teacher's Manual, a Student Workbook and a year of online audio for the jingles. Levels 1 to 6 are Shurley English Homeschooling, levels 7 and 8 the Shurley Method for Home Use, and a digital edition is sold too.

What it does well

  • Grammar is taught alongside writing, so each new part of speech is used straight away in the child's own sentences.
  • The Teacher's Manual is scripted, with answer keys, so a parent can teach grammar without preparing much.
  • Jingles and a spoken question-and-answer routine give children who like rhythm and repetition a way to remember the rules.
  • Print kits can be returned within 30 days in new condition, and a digital subscription can move to another level within 30 days.

Watch for

  • The site shows no prices on its pages; a parent has to open each Buy Now button or call to see the cost.
  • There is no placement test, and the FAQ asks parents to read each lesson word for word without skipping any.
  • A new kit is needed for each child every year, and the jingle audio needs an internet connection.
  • The lessons are parent-led every day; the child does not work through them alone.

It fits

A family that wants a scripted, steady grammar and writing course and a child who enjoys chants and routine.

It doesn’t fit

A family that wants a light grammar add-on, a child who works alone, or a program that lets the parent skip ahead.

What we read, and how we label

Every fact on a card was read on the publisher's own website on the date shown, and the page it came from is linked. A fact we could not confirm there is left out. Costs are for one child and one year of the main package, as the publisher's page showed them that day; prices and sales change. Method and format are the publisher's own description where it gives one. The only thing we say about religion is one label, secular or faith-based, given by the rule above; where the publisher's pages don't settle it, the card has no label.
