Hake Grammar and Writing

By Hake PublishingChecked October 31, 2026No affiliate links. Programs never pay to appear. How we label

Grammar and Writing is a language arts series for 3rd to 8th grade covering grammar, writing, vocabulary and spelling. Short grammar lessons build in small steps with continual review, a weekly dictation doubles as a spelling test, and a 25-question test follows every five lessons. Each level adds a writing workbook of about 35 lessons on essays, stories and poetry. The homeschool edition has a softcover textbook, the writing workbook and a teacher guide with answer keys and tests.

What it does well

  • Every grade covers the parts of speech, sentence structure, diagramming, capitalization, punctuation and usage, so gaps close as the levels repeat and deepen.
  • Grammar, writing, vocabulary and spelling come in one set, with dictation each week.
  • Short tests every five lessons and answer keys in the teacher guide make checking quick.
  • Examples draw on art, science, history and geography, with a different theme at each grade.

Watch for

  • Lessons are meant to be taught in order with none skipped, so it takes steady daily work.
  • A parent guides the practice and checks answers before the review set, and reads the dictations aloud.
  • The publisher sells only the school edition; homeschool kits come through homeschool distributors, and its site shows no prices.

It fits

A family that wants thorough, step-by-step grammar with diagramming and regular tests, plus a writing course in the same set.

It doesn’t fit

A family that wants grammar taught lightly through reading and narration, or a program with no tests.

What we read, and how we label

Every fact on a card was read on the publisher's own website on the date shown, and the page it came from is linked. A fact we could not confirm there is left out. Costs are for one child and one year of the main package, as the publisher's page showed them that day; prices and sales change. Method and format are the publisher's own description where it gives one. The only thing we say about religion is one label, secular or faith-based, given by the rule above; where the publisher's pages don't settle it, the card has no label.
