Kindergarten, week 28, day 1

Day 136 of 180 · Science: Seeds and growing · about 70 minutes

Reading20 min

New: ending blends

  1. This week: ending blends. Two sounds at the end of a word, each still heard: ha-n-d, ju-m-p.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: hand, sand, nest and fast.
  3. Your child finds a ending blends word in a book or on a box at home.
Math20 min

Longer or shorter?

  1. Hold a spoon and a fork side by side with their ends lined up. Which is longer?
  2. Line up the ends every time, or the test isn't fair.
Science15 min

Inside a seed

  1. Soak a dry bean in water overnight, then open it gently with a fingernail.
  2. Find the tiny baby plant inside, and the food stored around it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Meg and the Seed

  1. Read “Meg and the Seed” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
