Kindergarten, week 2, day 1

Day 6 of 180 · Science: My five senses · about 70 minutes

Reading20 min

New sound: a says /a/

  1. Say the short sound /a/ together, the sound at the start of apple, ant and ax. Vowels also say their name (the long sound); this week is the short one.
  2. Show big A and small a. Trace each with a finger, then write a row of each.
  3. Hunt for three things at home that start with /a/.
Math20 min

Count to 10 out loud

  1. Count to 10 together while doing ten jumps.
  2. Count back from 10 to 1 like a rocket, and shout blast off at zero.
Science15 min

Seeing

  1. Our eyes catch light so we can see. Look at something far away, then something close up.
  2. Play I spy with colors and shapes.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Red, Red, Red

  1. Read “Red, Red, Red” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
