Kindergarten, week 18, day 1

Day 86 of 180 · History: Community helpers · about 70 minutes

Reading20 min

Review the letter sounds

  1. Point to each letter learned so far (m, s, a, t, p, i, n, d, c, o, g, h, e, l, r, u, f, b, k, j, w, v, x, y, z and qu); your child says its sound.
  2. Go back over any sound that is slow, with a word that starts with it.
  3. Spin the letter wheel for a quick game: say the sound of whatever it lands on.
Math20 min

Quick sums to 5

  1. Say a sum within 5, like 2 + 2 or 4 + 1. Your child answers, using fingers if needed.
  2. Go faster as they get them right.
History15 min

Who helps us?

  1. Name helpers in your town: the mail carrier, the doctor, the firefighter, the librarian.
  2. What does each one do?
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Lion and Mouse

  1. Read “Lion and Mouse” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
