Day 36 of 180 · Science: Fall changes · Social studies: Caring for shared places · about 130 minutes
Reading30 min
New: doubling
- This week: doubling. After one short vowel and one consonant, double the consonant before -ed or -ing: hop, hopped, hopping.
- Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: hopped, hopping, stopped and stopping.
- Your child finds a doubling word in a book or on a box at home.

A fall walk
- Write the true story of a walk outside this week, in order.
- A true story tells what happened in order and how the writer felt. Your child includes a feeling and why they felt it.
Math30 min
Take away tens, then ones
- 68 − 25: take away 2 tens (48), then 5 ones (43).
- Do 79 − 34 and 56 − 21.

Why seasons change
- Daylight is shorter in fall and winter and longer in summer. Check sunset times in a weather report for a week.
- Write whether the days are getting shorter or longer.
Social studies15 min
Public and private
- Public places belong to everyone; private places belong to a person or a family. Sort ten places.
- Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min
Read-aloud: Why Do Leaves Change Color?
- Read “Why Do Leaves Change Color?” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
- This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
- On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
- Why Do Leaves Change Color?, read-along on screenteach.peabody.kids/read-aloud/why-do-leaves-change-color
