2nd grade, week 22, day 1

Day 106 of 180 · Social studies: Getting around, then and now · Science: Birds · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: -s, -es and -ies

  1. This week: -s, -es and -ies. Most words add -s, words ending in s, x, ch or sh add -es, and a y after a consonant turns to -ies.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: bikes, boxes, benches and babies.
  3. Your child finds a -s, -es and -ies word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

Wagon and train

  1. Write how traveling by wagon and by train are alike and how they are different.
  2. To compare, your child writes how two things are alike and how they are different, using both, but and however.
Math30 min

Asking a question

  1. Ask family and friends one question with four answers, like a favorite season, and tally the answers.
  2. Count the tallies for each answer.
Science15 min

A bird count

  1. Count the birds you see in fifteen minutes and sort them by size: smaller than a sparrow, about a robin, or bigger than a crow.
  2. Your child writes what they did, what they saw, and what they think it means, in a science notebook.
Social studies20 min

A transportation timeline

  1. Put walking, horses, sailing ships, trains, cars and airplanes on a timeline, oldest first.
  2. Write one way each one changed how people lived.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Run to Nome

  1. Read “The Run to Nome” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
