Beginnings: un- and re- · Fast facts within 20 · Summer and sun safety

Week 35 of 36 in 1st grade, in quarter 4. Five days, about 110 minutes each.

Reading: un- and re-, un- means not or undo (unlock), re- means again (reread). Words to read and spell: undo, unlock, unpack, unhappy, redo, reread, retell and refill. Sight words: “sing” and “sit”. The new story is “Tom and the Big Fish”, and the reread is “Ben and the Puddle Boat”.

Writing: A story to share. Your child writes a whole story, checks it, and copies it neatly into a little book to read to the family.

Math: Fast facts within 20. Practice until facts within 10 come quickly and facts within 20 come steadily.

Science: Summer and sun safety. Summer brings long days and strong sun, and shade, hats and water keep people safe and cool.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Voting and good citizens. Citizens help choose leaders by voting, follow fair rules, and help their community; children can practice all three.

Read-alouds: “The Sun Is a Star”, “The Tooth on the Beach”, “The Monkey and the Crocodile”, “Puss in Boots” and “The Hen Parade”.

For the whole family: Find the shadiest and the sunniest spot in your yard or a park, and feel the ground in each.
