Reading25 min

New: un- and re-

  1. This week: un- and re-. Un- means not or undo (unlock), re- means again (reread).
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: undo, unlock, unpack and unhappy.
  3. Your child finds a un- and re- word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

A summer story plan

  1. Plan a story about a summer day on a story map.
  2. Your child writes a whole story, checks it, and copies it neatly into a little book to read to the family.
Math25 min

Facts within 10 warm-up

  1. Practice facts within 10 on the fact fluency page.
  2. Compare the score with the one written down in the fall.
Science20 min

Long summer days

  1. In summer the sun rises early and sets late, so the days are long.
  2. Look up today's sunrise and sunset in a weather report and count the hours of daylight.
Social studies10 min

What citizens do

  1. List three things good citizens do, like following laws, helping neighbors and voting.
  2. Afterward, your child draws today's activity and writes one sentence about it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Sun Is a Star

  1. Read “The Sun Is a Star” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
