1st grade homeschool plan, week 33

Long vowels at the end of a syllable · Skip counting · Taking care of Earth

Week 33 of 36 in 1st grade, in quarter 4. Five days, about 110 minutes each.

Reading: open syllables, a vowel at the end of a syllable usually says its name: he, go, and the ba in baby. Words to read and spell: he, me, we, she, go, no, so and hi. Sight words: “or” and “pull”. The new story is “Mia and the Kite”, and the reread is “The Snail Race”.

Writing: A report about a living thing. Your child picks a plant or animal, writes four facts with a topic sentence and an ending, and draws a labeled picture.

Math: Skip counting. Counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, and seeing the patterns on the hundreds chart.

Science: Taking care of Earth. People change the land, water and air, and there are ways to use less, reuse and recycle.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: The bald eagle and the Liberty Bell. Symbols stand for ideas: the bald eagle stands for the country, and the Liberty Bell for freedom.

Read-alouds: “Why Is the Sky Blue?”, “From the Sun to the Pedals”, “Lulu the Lanternfish Lights Up”, “The Fisherman and His Wife” and “Mavis and the Greedy Mayor”.

For the whole family: Sort a day's trash and recycling together and find one thing the family can reuse.
