Day 161 of 180 · Science: Taking care of Earth · Social studies: The bald eagle and the Liberty Bell · about 110 minutes

Reading25 min

New: open syllables

  1. This week: open syllables. A vowel at the end of a syllable usually says its name: he, go, and the ba in baby.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: he, me, we and she.
  3. Your child finds a open syllables word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

Pick a living thing

  1. Pick a plant or an animal near your home and write a topic sentence about it.
  2. Your child picks a plant or animal, writes four facts with a topic sentence and an ending, and draws a labeled picture.
Math25 min

Count by 10s

  1. Count by 10s to 120 and color the tens on the hundreds chart.
  2. What pattern do the colored squares make?
Science20 min

Reduce, reuse, recycle

  1. Reduce means using less, reuse means using again, and recycle means making old things into new ones.
  2. Find one example of each at home.
Social studies10 min

What is a symbol?

  1. A symbol stands for an idea. List symbols you see every day, like a stop sign or a heart.
  2. Afterward, your child draws today's activity and writes one sentence about it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Why Is the Sky Blue?

  1. Read “Why Is the Sky Blue?” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
