New: -er and -est

  1. This week: -er and -est. -er compares two things (taller), -est compares three or more (tallest).
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: taller, tallest, faster and fastest.
  3. Your child finds a -er and -est word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

What you need

  1. Write what you need to play a game you know well.
  2. Your child writes how to play a game: what you need, how to start, how to take a turn, and how to win.
Math25 min

Pennies and nickels

  1. A penny is 1 cent and a nickel is 5 cents. Five pennies are worth one nickel.
  2. Trade pennies for nickels until there are none left to trade.
Science20 min

The engineer's steps

  1. Engineers ask, plan, build, test and make it better.
  2. Write the five steps on a strip of paper and use it all week.
Social studies10 min

Stripes and stars

  1. Count the 13 stripes and the 50 stars on a picture of the American flag.
  2. Afterward, your child draws today's activity and writes one sentence about it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Three Little Pigs

  1. Read “The Three Little Pigs” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
