1st grade, week 30, day 1

Day 146 of 180 · Science: Life cycles · Social studies: Working together · about 110 minutes

Reading25 min

New: -le

  1. This week: -le. -le at the end makes its own beat, /ul/: lit-tle, ap-ple.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: little, apple, table and puzzle.
  3. Your child finds a -le word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

A frog poem

  1. Write a list poem with one line for each stage of a frog's life.
  2. A list poem lists things about one topic, one on a line, and ends with a line that surprises. Your child reads it aloud.
Math25 min

Two equal parts

  1. Fold a paper rectangle in half so the two parts match exactly. Each part is one half.
  2. Fold another a different way. Are those halves too?
Science20 min

A frog's life cycle

  1. A frog starts as an egg, hatches as a tadpole with a tail, grows legs, and becomes a frog.
  2. Draw the four stages in a circle with arrows between them.
Social studies10 min

Many hands

  1. Do a big job together as a family, like tidying a room, and time it. Was it faster together?
  2. Afterward, your child draws today's activity and writes one sentence about it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Frogs Are Amazing

  1. Read “Frogs Are Amazing” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
