1st grade, week 3, day 1

Day 11 of 180 · Science: Seeing and hearing · about 85 minutes

Reading25 min

New: short e

  1. This week: short e. E as in bed, the short vowel that is easiest to mix up with i.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: bed, pen, ten and wet.
  3. Your child finds a short e word in a book or on a box at home.
Math25 min

Counting back

  1. 9 − 2: start at 9 and count back 2: 8, 7.
  2. Counting back works well for taking away 1, 2 or 3.
Science20 min

Sound is shaking

  1. Stretch a rubber band over an open box and pluck it. Watch it shake, and listen.
  2. Every sound comes from something vibrating, which means shaking fast.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Why Is the Sky Blue?

  1. Read “Why Is the Sky Blue?” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
