WriteShop
WriteShop is a writing program in three stages: WriteShop Primary (ages 5 to 9) uses games, crafts and picture books with the parent as guide and scribe; WriteShop Junior (ages 8 to 13) uses pre-writing games, skill builders and editing; and WriteShop I and II (6th to 12th grade) teach descriptive, narrative, informative and persuasive writing and self-editing. Each Primary and Junior book has 10 lessons, usually spread over three weeks each, so most families finish one book a year.

What it does well
- Writing is taught step by step, from dictated sentences in Primary to edited essays in high school, with each level building on the last.
- Games and pre-writing activities help a reluctant writer get ideas before facing a blank page.
- Checklists and grading forms help a parent who feels unsure about marking writing.
- High school students do most of the work alone between short planning and editing sessions.
Watch for
- Each level needs both the Teacher's Guide or Manual and the student pack; the student pages alone have no writing instructions.
- Grammar is only lightly covered, and the publisher suggests a separate grammar program if it is a weak area.
- The publisher's pages show no prices; they are on the Demme Learning store.
- Primary and Junior are parent-and-child teamwork, so the parent is involved in every lesson.
It fits
A family that wants a structured writing course with games and clear steps, and a parent willing to write alongside a younger child.
It doesn’t fit
A family that wants grammar and writing in one book, or a younger child who will write on their own.

What we read, and how we label
Every fact on a card was read on the publisher's own website on the date shown, and the page it came from is linked. A fact we could not confirm there is left out. Costs are for one child and one year of the main package, as the publisher's page showed them that day; prices and sales change. Method and format are the publisher's own description where it gives one. The only thing we say about religion is one label, secular or faith-based, given by the rule above; where the publisher's pages don't settle it, the card has no label.
