Kolbe Academy
Kolbe Academy is an accredited home education program and online school for preschool to 12th grade, built on a classical plan in three stages: grammar, logic and rhetoric. Families mix parent-taught homeschool courses with live online classes and self-paced online courses. Course plans come with texts, lessons, assignments, exams and answer keys, and the school keeps grade records and transcripts with an advisor for each family.

- Placement
- No placement test on the publisher’s site when we checked.
What it does well
- Families can mix parent-taught, live online and self-paced courses, so a child can take one hard subject online and the rest at home.
- Course plans include the lessons, assignments, exams and answer keys, with a curriculum map from grade to grade.
- The school keeps grade records and transcripts and runs a diploma program, which helps in the high school years.
- Single courses for 1st to 12th grade can be taken part-time without full enrollment.
Watch for
- Books come from the bookstore; Standard tuition includes $200 of credit per student, so check what a grade's books cost beyond that.
- Live online classes cost several times more than parent-taught enrollment.
- The full tuition table is posted as images on the tuition page, so confirm the figure for your grade with admissions.
- Math uses other publishers' textbooks (Singapore or Sadlier in the early grades), so check they suit your child.
It fits
A family that wants a classical plan with records and transcripts kept for them, and the option of online teachers for some subjects.
It doesn’t fit
A family that wants to design its own course of study, or keep costs very low with free materials.

What we read, and how we label
Every fact on a card was read on the publisher's own website on the date shown, and the page it came from is linked. A fact we could not confirm there is left out. Costs are for one child and one year of the main package, as the publisher's page showed them that day; prices and sales change. Method and format are the publisher's own description where it gives one. The only thing we say about religion is one label, secular or faith-based, given by the rule above; where the publisher's pages don't settle it, the card has no label.
