Kindergarten, week 3, day 1

Day 11 of 180 · Science: Seeing and hearing · about 70 minutes

Reading20 min

New sound: p says /p/

  1. Say the sound /p/ together, the sound at the start of pig, pan and pot. Keep it short and crisp, without an "uh" after it.
  2. Show big P and small p. Trace each with a finger, then write a row of each.
  3. Hunt for three things at home that start with /p/.
Math20 min

Writing 0, 1 and 2

  1. Show how to write 0, 1 and 2 big, in the air and then on paper.
  2. Your child writes each one and draws that many dots beside it.
Science15 min

Light helps us see

  1. Go into a dark room together, then switch on a flashlight. What can you see now that you couldn't before?
  2. We need light to see colors and shapes.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Little Lantern

  1. Read “The Little Lantern” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
