1st grade, week 6, day 1

Day 26 of 180 · Science: Sun and shade · about 85 minutes

Reading25 min

New: l and r blends

  1. This week: l and r blends. Two consonants side by side, each still heard: f-l-a-g, c-r-a-b.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: flag, clap, plum and slip.
  3. Your child finds a l and r blends word in a book or on a box at home.
Math25 min

Three dice

  1. Roll three dice and add them.
  2. Look for a pair that makes 10 or a double first, then add the third.
Science20 min

Shadow tracing

  1. In the morning, trace your child's shadow on the sidewalk with chalk, marking where they stood.
  2. Trace it again at noon from the same spot. What changed?
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Sun Is a Star

  1. Read “The Sun Is a Star” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
