Read: Where Is Ned's Hat?

  1. Your child reads it aloud to you, then reads one page again with expression, the way a character would say it.
  2. When your child is stuck, say the first sound and let them finish the word, rather than saying the whole word.
  3. Afterward, ask: who was in the story, and what happened?
Writing15 min

Joining the facts

  1. Write your question as a topic sentence and add your three facts after it.
  2. Start with a question about the topic. Your child finds three facts that answer it and writes them as a paragraph.
Math25 min

Half an hour later

  1. It is 3:00. What time will it be in half an hour? In one hour?
  2. Move the hands to check, then ask three more.
Science20 min

Muscles pull

  1. Muscles pull on bones to move them; they can pull but not push. Bend your arm and feel the muscle on top get hard.
  2. Straighten your arm and feel the muscle underneath work.
Social studies10 min

A time capsule

  1. Put five things in a box that show your life today, to open again in a few years.
  2. Your child tells someone at home about today, then writes one word for it on the family calendar.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Paul Bunyan and Babe

  1. Read “Paul Bunyan and Babe” aloud, and let your child turn the pages.
  2. This is an old tale, told for a long time. Afterward, ask: what did someone in the story learn?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
